The Painted Bird: Birds in 3000 Years of Art

Sunday, May 21, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Can you go birdwatching in an art museum? Absolutely, and this lecture will show you why looking at birds in a museum’s collection is not only fun but important for both ornithology and art history. Looking at the birds, mammals, and other creatures in an art museum’s collection we can learn about the changing human views of natural world. But why did artists choose to depict one type of bird rather than another?  In this lecture we’ll attempt to answer that question as we look at Mayan turkeys, Ancient Greek owls, Dutch magpies, modernist gulls and much more . The great thing about gallery birding is your feet never get wet, the birds sit still and your day list is like no other. So grab a field guide, but leave your wellies at home, and join us for an afternoon of birds in art.

After the lecture, stick around and we will do some gallery birding by identifying species in A Curious Nature and A Feast of Beasts.
