CURATOR

Position Description: The Fitchburg Art Museum (FAM) seeks an experienced, dynamic, and creative Curator to manage and provide vision for our Curatorial Department. The Curator oversees FAM’s collections, organizes innovative exhibitions of contemporary New England art, helps organize and guide public programs and community art initiatives, and helps maintain the forward momentum of an established and growing AAM-accredited institution.

The Curator reports to the Museum Director and is a key member of the senior leadership team. The Curator supervises a Collection Manager, Curatorial Fellow, and interns, and works closely with eminent Consulting Curators of African Art and Photography, along with a small but passionately devoted professional staff. The Curator is the staff liaison to the FAM Collection Committee, participates in team-teaching at Fitchburg State University and serves on the 2021- 2025 Strategic Plan Steering Committee. The Curator also works with collectors, donors, press, and other external stakeholders. Some registrarial work is required.

Qualifications: The successful candidate must have significant museum experience, an MA or PhD in art history, a background in contemporary art as well as a broad general knowledge of art history, and familiarity with the New England visual arts community. Excellent leadership, communications, and organization skills, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and a winning personality are expected. The successful candidate must also have experience working with living artists, and deeply value diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility at all levels of museum practice. Experience with public art management and Spanish language skills are also desired.

FAM is located in four buildings across a city block in downtown Fitchburg, in North Central Massachusetts. Its varied collection of over 6,000 objects includes particular strengths in American Art, African Art and photography. FAM maintains 12,000 square feet of exhibition space, presents three major special exhibitions of New England contemporary art annually, and periodically re-installs selected permanent collection galleries.

FAM works closely with the City of Fitchburg, the Fitchburg Public Schools, Fitchburg State University, and many other partners to improve the quality of life and community health in our region.
