Messages to Your Ancestors

Artist Imna Arroyo created this installation to honor the souls of those lost in the Middle Passage of the Atlantic slave trade. Arroyo’s artwork addresses a painful historical moment as a means to heal. The altar beneath the prints is interactive, inviting visitors to write a memory, prayer, wish, or comment. As we contemplate our present circumstances, our past, and hopes for the future, we invite you to share your wishes, memories, and prayers, either as comments or via the form below. FAM staff will transcribe your words and attach them to the altar. Your messages will be ceremonially burned at the close of the exhibition.
