MUSEUM TECHNICIAN 


Description:
The Museum Technician serves in the Curatorial Department of the Fitchburg Art Museum under the supervision of the Curator and Collections Manager. They will prepare objects for display, aid in the installation of exhibitions, and assist with the care and cleaning of the collection. This is a full-time one year position.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Prepares objects for display in upcoming exhibitions under the supervision of the Curator and for storage under the supervision of the Collections Manager
• Performs object handling for exhibitions, research, and storage at the museum and off-site storage
• Assists the lead preparator(s) during exhibition installations
• Performs light fabrication as needed for exhibitions or storage
• Assists with the re-housing, packing, boxing, crating and unpacking objects using approved methods and materials.
• Assist with the light cleaning of objects in the collection
• Assists in maintaining and cleaning work rooms and storage areas
• Help supervise temporary packers and assist with training of staff/interns/volunteers in packing/building techniques as needed
• Performs miscellaneous Collections and Curatorial duties as assigned

Experience/Skills Required:
• Minimum of 2 years experience in museum art handling, installations, and preparation
• Ability to interpret and follow detailed instructions
• Ability to work in a team environment and to work tactfully and effectively with fellow staff, vendors, curators, and the public
• Excellent interpersonal skills. Positive and collegial work ethic
• Knowledge of and experience with the best practices in the care, safe handling, packing of 2-D and 3-D objects, including proficiency in custom crating, box-making, soft-packing, and cavity packing.
• Ability to safely operate and or work from personnel lifts, scaffolding, and tall ladders (10 feet or more)
• Ability to lift, push, pull, and support heavy objects, oversize works on paper and paintings, crates and other items up to 70 pounds.
• Strong initiative and work ethic with flexibility to respond to and act in changing circumstances
• Experience with matting and framing photographs and works on paper.
• Knowledge of archival materials and fine art packing techniques, including proficiency in custom crating, box-making, soft-packing, and cavity packing.
• Basic woodworking skills and experience with shop equipment including power and manual woodworking tools
• Interior painting skills required
• MUST have a valid drivers’ license and be comfortable driving a van or small moving truck

Compensation:
• This is a one year contract position
• Salary: 33,000 – 37,000 depending on experience.
• 10 Paid Vacation Days, 3 Sick Days, and 2 Personal Days as well as additional generous time off including holidays.
