Cicely Carew: Quantum Sanctuary

October 1, 2022-January 8, 2023

Cicely Carew devotes her practice to the expression of radical joy and liberation through the language of abstraction. Considering the needs of heart and mind in the darkness of our present moment, Carew’s immersive installation Quantum Sanctuary transports guests to a reclamation space that activates the senses and promotes awareness of our interconnectedness. Light and sound, digital display, and physical sculpture merge to explore embodied consciousness honoring Carew’s ancestral origins. Quantum Sanctuary marks an evolution in Carew’s existing body of work through the blending of her honed sculptural practice with her more recent experimentation with digital art. In this new work, Carew brings visible energy transference into contact with the image of the human body, with her own form appearing postured with joy in an incandescent environment of inverted color.

Boston-based artist Cicely Carew earned her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and her MFA from Lesley Art + Design in Cambridge, MA. Carew’s work wields the formal, material, and sculptural aspects of painting to evoke radical joy, hope, and liberation. Her practice is also heavily influenced by nature and our relationship to it and her life as a mother and wellness coach outside the studio. Carew is the recipient of the 2022 BYN Mellon Blanche E. Colman Award.
